The club has received an email from Cardinia Life regarding research being conducted at the stadium over the next 3 Saturdays. Please see the email below for further information.
To All Club & Saturday Basketball Teams,
Researchers from Deakin University will be present at Cardinia Life on Saturdays for three weeks to talk to young people (aged 11-16) who are fans of basketball about their awareness of gambling advertising. While research has been conducted with children who play AFL and NRL, there is no information about how children who are fans of other codes may be exposed to sports betting, and the impact of this on their attitudes.
The project findings will provide important practical information for local councils, public health practitioners and policy makers in understanding the how sports betting advertising may shape young people’s attitudes towards gambling. The information collected in this study will be used to inform policy discussions about effective strategies to tackle gambling harm in young people. Young people generally enjoy taking part in this study and enjoy having their views heard.
The study takes 10 minutes for the children to complete with a member of the research team. The study has received ethical approval from Deakin University, and is completely voluntary for children. They will only be able to participate with the consent of a parent or guardian. The research team will be able to provide more information for parents, and answer any questions that they may have. Parents are able to observe the survey, and children receive a drink bottle for participating in the study. The Deakin team will also hold an information session for parents at a later date at Cardinia Life about young people and gambling.
This study will be set up in the foyer at Cardinia Life on Saturday May 12.
